“A comprehensive exam is $140 here, for adults and kids. It checks the health of your whole eye, not just whether you need new glasses.”
Do You Have Vision Insurance?
It is the only question that changes what you pay. Both answers are fine here.
Yes — we are likely in network
We are in network with VSP, EyeMed, Aetna, Davis Vision, Superior Vision, Spectera (UnitedHealthcare Vision), Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield vision plans, Medicare and Florida Medicaid. Most insured patients pay only their plan’s exam copay.
Bring your card and we will verify your specific benefit before the exam rather than after it. If your plan is not listed, call us anyway — we can often still bill out of network, and we will tell you the cost either way. Full details are on our insurance page, and there is a dedicated page for Medicaid and Medicare patients.
No — and that is genuinely fine
A large share of our patients pay out of pocket. The price is $140 flat. There is no separate refraction fee, no facility charge and no upsell built into the exam.
- You get the same exam, the same equipment and the same doctor as an insured patient.
- Your written prescription is yours — printed and handed to you before you leave.
- Glasses and contacts are priced separately, and there is no obligation to buy here.
What $140 Actually Covers
A vision screening tells you whether you can read a chart. A comprehensive exam looks at the health of the eye itself, which is where the things worth catching early actually appear.

- Refraction — your exact prescription for distance, reading and astigmatism. Included, never billed as an add-on.
- Eye health evaluation — front-of-eye and retinal assessment, checking for glaucoma, cataract and retinal changes.
- Pressure check — intraocular pressure, the standard early screen for glaucoma.
- Systemic signs — the retina is the one place we can see blood vessels directly, so diabetes and high blood pressure often show here first.
- Time with the doctor — Dr. Teresita Bollar reviews the findings with you in plain language.
- Your written prescription — handed over at the end of the visit.
Our page on what to expect at an eye exam walks through the full sequence, and retinal imaging explains the scanning we use instead of dilation drops and the air puff test.
How That Compares
National ranges for a comprehensive eye exam without insurance:
| Where you go | Typical cost | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Style Site Optical, Aventura | $140 | Comprehensive exam with the doctor, refraction included, prescription released. |
| Independent private practice | $150 – $300+ | Comparable depth. Refraction is sometimes billed separately. |
| Retail optical chain | $69 – $130 | Shorter appointment, often with an independent doctor beside the shop rather than in house. |
| National average | $100 – $150 | Across all provider types, without insurance. |
Retail chains are genuinely cheaper on the exam. They typically make the margin back on the eyewear. Whether that trade is worth it depends on how much you value the depth of the exam and having the same team handle any problem afterwards.
Other Costs You Might Be Weighing
If contact lenses are the question, our guide to contact lens examination cost breaks down why the fitting adds to the price. For speciality lenses, see scleral contact lens cost.
If you need a vision form completed for a licence renewal, we can do that during a standard exam — see DMV vision test.
Common Questions
How much is an eye exam without insurance?
$140 here, flat. Nationally it runs $100 to $250 at private practices and $69 to $130 at retail chains.
Is refraction charged separately?
No. Some practices bill it as a $30 to $60 add-on, which is how a quoted $99 exam becomes $149. It is included in our $140.
Why does a contact lens exam cost more?
It is the comprehensive exam plus a fitting — corneal measurements, trial lenses and a follow-up visit to confirm the fit. That is effectively a second appointment.
Do you accept Medicaid and Medicare?
Yes, both, for adults and children. We verify your specific plan before the exam.
Do I have to buy glasses here?
No. Your prescription is released at the end of the visit and you are free to take it anywhere.
How long until my glasses are ready?
Typically 7 to 10 business days, depending on the lens. We will give you a firm date when you order.
Can I be seen the same day?
Often, yes — particularly for urgent problems like redness, pain or a sudden change in vision. Call and describe what is happening.
If you want the practical detail of the visit rather than the price, our page on the eye exam with an Aventura doctor walks through what is included and how long to allow.
