Who is most at risk
Risk adds up. If one or more of these applies to you, regular glaucoma checks matter even more.
Age over 60
The eye's drainage system becomes less efficient with age, and risk climbs steadily after 40.
Family history
A parent or sibling with glaucoma raises your risk several times over.
Hispanic, African or Caribbean ancestry
Open-angle glaucoma tends to start earlier and progress faster, which makes screening especially important in South Florida.
High eye pressure
The biggest risk factor you can change, and the one glaucoma treatment targets.
Diabetes or vascular disease
Reduced blood flow leaves the optic nerve more vulnerable, even at ordinary eye pressures.
Steroids or a past eye injury
Steroid drops, inhalers or pills, and old eye injuries, can raise eye pressure years later.
WHY IT MATTERS
Normal eye pressure doesn't rule glaucoma out
Many people with glaucoma have normal eye pressure, and some people with high pressure never develop it. That's why an air-puff reading isn't a glaucoma screening. We look directly at the optic nerve and measure its nerve fibre layer with OCT, so we can see damage years before you'd notice any change in your vision.

How glaucoma screening and monitoring works
Screening is part of every comprehensive exam. Monitoring visits are scheduled based on your risk.
Pressure and history
We measure eye pressure and go over your family history, medications and other risk factors.
Optic nerve exam
Dr. Bollar examines and photographs the optic nerve, looking for the changes that signal glaucoma.
OCT imaging
If you're at risk, an OCT scan measures the nerve fibre layer so we can track tiny changes over time.
Your plan
Normal results mean yearly checks. Suspicious results mean closer monitoring or referral to a glaucoma specialist.
What it costs
Glaucoma screening is included in the $140 comprehensive exam. Glaucoma monitoring visits are medical and are usually billed to your medical insurance; without insurance, a medical eye visit is $150.

Does glaucoma have symptoms?
The common form doesn't. It takes side vision first and central vision last, and your brain fills in the gaps, so most people notice nothing until significant, permanent damage is done. That's why screening matters.
My eye pressure is normal. Can I still have glaucoma?
Yes. A significant share of glaucoma patients have normal eye pressure. That's why we look at the optic nerve itself, not just the pressure number.
How often should I be checked?
Every one to two years for most adults, and every year if you're over 60, have a family history, are of Hispanic, African or Caribbean ancestry, or have diabetes.
Can glaucoma be cured?
Lost vision doesn't come back. But treatment — usually eye drops, sometimes laser or surgery — can slow or stop further damage, which is why catching it early matters so much.
Is glaucoma ever an emergency?
Yes. Sudden severe eye pain, headache with nausea or vomiting, blurred vision and halos around lights can be acute angle-closure glaucoma. Call us right away on (305) 727-3937 or go to the nearest emergency room.
Do you treat glaucoma?
We screen for, diagnose and monitor glaucoma in our office, and work with glaucoma specialists when treatment is needed, so your records and images follow you.

We accept most vision and medical plans, including VSP, EyeMed, Davis Vision, Spectera, Aetna, Cigna, Oscar, Humana and Florida Medicaid. Bring your card or call with your plan details and we'll check your benefits before you come in. See the full insurance list.
What are your hours?
Monday to Friday 9 am–5 pm and Saturday 9 am–2 pm. Closed Sunday.
