Yes, we accept Medicaid
For adults and children alike, as long as the service is covered by the plan. That includes children’s eye exams and glasses. Families often struggle to find a pediatric eye doctor who accepts Medicaid in this part of Miami-Dade, so if that is what brought you here: yes, we can see your child. Call us and we will confirm the coverage before you come in.
Vision insurance and medical insurance are not the same thing
This is the single most confusing part of eye care billing, and it catches almost everyone out. The difference comes down to why you are being seen, not what happens during the visit.
Your vision plan covers routine care
A vision plan — VSP, EyeMed, Davis and similar — is a benefits package, not true insurance. It typically covers:
- A routine eye exam once a year to check your sight
- An updated glasses or contact lens prescription
- An allowance towards frames or lenses
Your medical insurance covers eye health problems
The moment there is a medical reason for the visit, it is usually billed to your medical insurance instead. That includes:
- Eye infections, injuries and emergencies
- Glaucoma testing and monitoring
- Diabetic eye exams and hypertension-related checks
- Dry eye treatment
- Cataract evaluation, flashes and floaters, and sudden changes in vision
So a patient who comes in for a routine exam and mentions a red, painful eye may find that part of the visit is billed medically. It is not a billing trick — it is how the two systems are designed to work, and we will always explain which applies before we proceed.
Can I use both?
Often yes. A common pattern is the medical side covering the health examination and the vision plan covering the glasses or contact lens allowance. We will work out the best combination for you.
If you don’t have insurance
You are very welcome. We see plenty of self-paying patients and we will tell you what something costs before we do it, not after.

If you do have coverage, you will usually pay only your plan’s copay, which varies from plan to plan — call us with your member ID and we will tell you the exact amount before you come in. We are happy to quote over the phone.

What to bring to your appointment
- Your insurance card, or your member ID and the subscriber’s date of birth
- A photo ID
- Your current glasses and contact lenses, including the boxes if you have them
- A list of any medications you take — several affect the eyes
- For a child’s visit, the parent or guardian’s insurance details
