Who Scleral Lenses Are For
Scleral lenses rest on the white of the eye and hold a cushion of saline over the cornea, which is why they work when other options fail. They're typically prescribed for:
Keratoconus
A smooth new optical surface over a cone-shaped cornea, restoring sharp vision.
Severe dry eye
The saline reservoir keeps the cornea hydrated all day — relief for Sjögren's and similar conditions.
Post-LASIK, RK or corneal transplant
Corrects irregular astigmatism and halos that glasses and soft lenses can't.
Corneal scarring or pellucid degeneration
Vaults over the damaged area for stable, clear vision.
Failed with regular contacts
If soft or RGP lenses pop out, blur or hurt, sclerals are usually the answer.

Why Sclerals Work When Nothing Else Does
A standard contact lens sits on the cornea and takes its shape. If the cornea is irregular, the lens is irregular too, and vision stays blurry. A scleral lens is larger and rests entirely on the sclera, bridging over the cornea without touching it.
That vault does two things: it replaces the irregular surface with a perfectly smooth optical one, and it bathes the cornea in preservative-free saline all day. Patients who were told 'nothing more can be done' routinely reach 20/20 or close to it.

Scleral lenses are not off-the-shelf. Every pair is designed from measurements of your eye, then refined until the fit and vision are right.
Map
We image your cornea with topography to capture its exact shape, height and irregularities.
Trial & design
Diagnostic lenses are placed on the eye and evaluated; the results are sent to the lab for your custom pair.
Dispense & train
You'll learn insertion, removal and care, then return for follow-ups to fine-tune comfort and vision.
Most patients are fully adapted within a couple of weeks. Lenses are worn during the day only, cleaned nightly, and typically last one to three years.

Dr. Teresita Bollar is the owner and lead optometrist at Style Site Optical. A graduate of Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry, she has practiced across Miami-Dade since 2009 in clinics, hospitals and independent practices, and fits scleral and specialty contact lenses for patients with keratoconus, irregular corneas and severe dry eye.

Are scleral lenses comfortable?
Yes — usually more comfortable than regular contacts. Because the lens rests on the less sensitive white of the eye and never touches the cornea, most patients forget they're wearing them.
How long does the fitting take?
Plan on two to four visits over a few weeks: the exam and mapping, the diagnostic fitting, dispensing with training, and at least one follow-up to fine-tune the fit.
How much do scleral lenses cost?
Sclerals are a bigger investment than standard contacts because each lens is custom-made. Plan on $140 for the comprehensive exam and corneal mapping, about $450 for the custom fitting, and lenses starting at $1,500 per lens. Many medical plans cover them as medically necessary for keratoconus and irregular corneas; we'll check your coverage before you commit.
Does insurance cover them?
Often, yes. For keratoconus, post-surgical corneas and severe dry eye, many medical plans cover scleral lenses as medically necessary. We'll verify your benefits before you commit.
Can I sleep or swim in them?
No. Scleral lenses are removed nightly, cleaned, and stored in preservative-free saline. Avoid swimming and showering with them in.
What if my vision fogs up mid-day?
Mid-day fogging is a known issue and is fixable — usually with a change in filling solution, lens design or fit. Tell us and we'll adjust it.
