Finally I understood VERY CLEARLY about Essilor Varilux – functions, deferences, etc. etc. All other descriptions on the Webs are not well organized, and not clear. I am about to make a new pair of eyeglasses after my cataract surgery, so, this was really useful information. Thank you very much again!!!

  2. I am 75 years old male with astigmatism, I have been wearing eyeglasses (and briefly, exchangeably contacts that I hated) for more than 60 years, including progressives for 35 years. I am an engineer with scientific background and a pilot and a sailor as hobbies. I have never had any ‘swim’ problem or ‘screen switching’ problem in my life with traditional progressives AND I DON’T WANT ANY LENS MANUFACTURER TO SOLVE THOSE PROBLEMS FOR ME. What I want are the widest crisp far (the most important), intermediate and near areas, as constant focus in each area as possible, as spherical lenses do. I don’t mind to benefit also from aspheric corrections, if that can improve on traditional spherical design (with cylindrical corrections). I don’t want any ‘design softening’ etc., because I need to move my eyes, not my head quickly, in particular while flying and scanning the outside (I must see other SMALL airplanes 5 miles away and beyond), or scanning the instrument panel – both are impossible with predominant head movements. My vision has always been 20-15, corrected. It is still 20-15 after my last year cataract operations, corrected with far vision or reading glasses. My eyesight corrections are a lot less now, than they had been in the recent decades. The ‘add’ correction is still the same, the cylinder corrections are smaller, but I am still predominantly near sighted without glasses.
    Because of the above I need:
    1. The largest, crispest vision corridor,
    2. The largest blank available for my lenses to be cut from.
    I WILL NEVER ACCEPT THE CURRENT (last 18 years or so) fashion for midget lens sizes. My lenses MUST have 63 mm or more widths when mounted, my PD is 65 mm.
    In the 1980-ties I wore 70mm + wide lenses, which were normal sizes then, around 63 mm at the lower end.
    I understand that I need hard design lenses, with no design softening attempt. I find wishy-washy design option descriptions mostly useless, because they lack technical details. None of the types pushed to the public addresses my needs. I am sure any design softening would compromise my objectives.
    I had never had problems with my vision prescriptions or making of my eyeglasses when I lived in Europe (several countries). I moved to the U.S. (with my work, unexpectedly in 1995) & here I first came across inaccurate optometrists (I have found 3 doctors in Houston I trust, which has solved that problem) and bangler labs that don’t care about the PD and the vertical locations of the fitting crosses (both up to 6 mm errors). Those were often solved quickly by re-making of my eyeglasses. More recently, several labs started to also change the agreed mounted lens sizes from 63 mm agreed with opticians, down to unacceptable 58 mm, which result in very narrow useable focal areas and require head movements only for focusing. They can’t resist that temptation, because my current frames are rimless Silhouettes. I had used those several times previously, and that wasn’t a problem. Some idiot opticians argue that I must use ONLY midget eyeglasses because on my 65mm PD. That or/avarice (cheaper blanks) might be a factor why labs change my orders. Younger people might have never worked with older, normal lens sizes. They always order small blanks, some might not know how to use simple geometry to determine blank size required for larger lenses.
    I suspect that Varilux XR might be a good choice, but the design softening they use might invalidate this suspicion. With Zeiss Individual 3, or Drivesafe might be acceptable, with the same uncertainty. Otherwise, I might need to stay with lower end designs that still use old cylindrical geometries.
